Zebra Crossing Memorial

Here's a beautiful, and slightly chilling, piece of physical information visualization by advertising agency Draft FCB Lisbon.

The visualization is designed as a zebra crossing memorial and was made in conjunction with the campaign 'Safe Street Week' in Portugal. The stripes are made up of names, supposedly of pedestrians killed by cars.

Not to sound too snotty - I really like when intangible information is conceptualized and made visually present - but I am not sure if this will have any meaningful impact (other than the obvious artistic kind) or if it will in fact distract pedestrians and put their lives at risk.

Video documentation on YouTube

You only take 2,3 seconds to realize that it´s only names
on the street. The really important message it´s on both sides of the street where you can see that 1/4 of car accident victims are pedestrians. Nice piece of ambient media.

COMMENT BY: Not Snotty DATE: May 07, 2007.

It takes less than 2.3 seconds to get hit by car.

COMMENT BY: nik DATE: May 08, 2007.

They should have left an empty space between all the names with a text next to it saying: If you stare at this empty space long enough your name will suddenly appear

COMMENT BY: me & my DATE: May 09, 2007.

very beatiful urban work but very poor link with the message... good ideias aren't not always gerrilla mkt!

COMMENT BY: guimes DATE: May 10, 2007.

love it. And by the way: i think the the link with the message is the very strong. disruptive.

COMMENT BY: Ted DATE: May 11, 2007.

It's the wrong people who see the message. It should be those driving cars who are confronted with the names of the victims, not the pedestrians.

COMMENT BY: adguy DATE: May 14, 2007.

EXACTLY! this message is viewed by the wrong people, and this people can actually end up BEING part the message.
Disruptive??? I don't see anything disruptive in that.

the propaganda world need to make new words, because the ones it have aren't fitting anymore

COMMENT BY: Fred Berkensztein DATE: May 14, 2007.

I think that pedestrians can be drivers too. You have to tell me what world are you from, Berkensztein. I think what bothers you more is teh fact that this was made by the "propaganda world". They can be smart and, you know that?
it´s pure Ambient Media-Innovation to me. it´s the kind of ideas anyone would love to have in their portfolio.
Are you guys the client?

COMMENT BY: the real adguy DATE: May 15, 2007.

There´s not a single registation of an accident envolving pedestrians in this zebra crossing memorial. And thousands of people have now more awareness for the fact that 1/4 of car accidents victims aren´t always inside a car. Simple and effective.
I think no one is going to stop in the middle of traffic just to read a billboard or to stare at some model´s boobs. Will you?
Pedestrians may even learn to pay more attencion next time. The zebra crossing was placed near traffic lights to prevent this kind of problem.

I work for the ad industry too I can imagina that in a greater position than you, real ad guy, and what bothers me the most is peolple like you.

People who THINK'S TO BE "THE REAL (AND ONLY) AD GUY". get serious. and a life too.

Life's not just a portfolio, my friend.

You are afraid of your own clichês, affraid that everyboy thinks, that you, the REAL AD GUY isn't that smart.

We can undestand in the last line of your statement that you still live in past decade Maniqueist world (I don't think you know what it means) that clients are always against creative people.

I feel sorry for you, ambient-media guy.

COMMENT BY: Anonymous DATE: May 15, 2007.

sorry for you TOO, real ad guy!
you got what you deserve for calling URself so REAL!

ALOHA

COMMENT BY: Marc DATE: May 15, 2007.

ambient-media... very nice

now we can go to the church and write the name of everyone that's was killed under pope's name.
IT's a good idea and get's lots of atention too. very disruptive

what people don't undestand is that not everything that catches your atention is a great piece of advertising.

Advertising is about narrowing the gap between people and brands.

th idea of the names in the street, it is really a good idea. very nice execution. but it's a longway to be good advertising or something relevant for the population and pedestrians that live in the biggest cities in the world.

maybe it is relevant for the portfolio of the REAL AD GUY... and maybe it helps him to get a better job

for the pedestrians, the population... I don't think so.

Ok, don´t be mad. You´re not the client. You are the account. ehhe. Just kidding.
Happy, now, guru ad industry guy? :D
And no: I don´t believe that clients are always against creative people. I strongly believe we all play an important role in the industry.

I guess i have to respect others opinions. I just hope you respect my own, even playing a less important role
in the ad industry.

Accept my apollogies.

Paulo,

Cumprimentos

Queria escrever "E dizer que a publicidade serve"

very respectful of others opinion as we can see, Mr Real AD and Peace Guy...

If you really work in the ad industry, you must take care with the message your trying to pass. ;-)
So, I understand that you aren't being so pedant and snobby as I thought you were.

Apollogies accepted!

Caro,

how many "peões" got hit while reading the zebra thing?

COMMENT BY: luêtranger DATE: Aug 15, 2007.

i think its not that good of an idea,, because its almost as if your walking all over these names, and driving over them as if they were valueless..

and besides wouldnt this be distracting to the driver or pedestrian.

hello does anybody know where is this in Lisbon? just moved here from Hungary.
