Digital Fuel for Travel

Barcode

In addition to the tons of other things you can already do or buy at Schiphol Airport, now you can tank up your mp3 player or telephone with digital content.

Fuel for Travel is a new store where passengers in transit can buy and download music, audio books and videos for almost any mobile device.

The store is finansed by Samsung but apparently they happily tank up other platforms as well.

On a side note, the concept reminds me of a research project that I carried out with Fiat Centro Stile in Turin in 2001 which investigated how to stimulate Fiat travellers by offering them mental fuel shaped as a social highway service.

Very interesting. But isn't this also a bit odd? I would argue that the most exciting part of mobile entertainment is that you can get it on the go--on your phone, for example. Maybe the issue is that people aren't yet accustomed to the idea. This store seems like a "seed" for getting people to use mobile content, but the future doesn't seem to hold much promise for a brick-and-mortar mobile content store... I think.

I somewhat agree with the last comment. But I firmly believe that many people now and in the future buy into the experience as much as they do they media. Buying from Fuel For Travel is a better story to tell than a lonely download. There's alot to be said for sharing the experience.

The current 'over the air' download speed is still not sufficient for high quality music downloads (not to mention videotransfer). Therefore wired sollution might be bridging the gap of technological difficulties.

Yes of course mobile allow you to download content, and music for instance, but what about the choice of tracks, the price (I saw some tracks sold for about £1.50 a track by a mobile network provider! I think we have to remember that mobile phone are initially phone with, ok, some adds on, but they are gadget for people who really enjoy music. Download via mobile phone looks promising but will have short life and will be restricted to a small community of users.

i guess this type of airport-service will increase now that check-in time in the EU has been extended due to new security restrictions. bad for travellers (who will spend more time in transition) but good for the service industry...
